My Thoughts on Spices (and maybe an answer to KK #1)

As I've moved, I've been thinking about the hierarchy of spices. Some are simply more essential than others. Number one is cinnamon - for oatmeal of course. I actually brought this with me in my luggage because I had accidentally bought a brand new one out of fear that I didn't already own one. So yes, cinnamon is essential. Does my oatmeal actually taste that much different without it? I'm not sure. Would I like to find out by going cold turkey? Definitely not.

Number two is salt. This actually really does change the flavor profile of almost every food. Go figure.

Number three is pepper, only because if you buy cute salt and pepper shakers, you really can't leave the pepper shaker hanging. Or deprive salt of its bffl. But real talk, how often do you go "oh, you know what this could really use? Pepper!" For me the answer is close to never.

Numbers four and five are garlic and onion powder, respectively. These obviously don't replace the real things, but they are quick and easy and just what I need (until I get more settled and decide I'm ready to buy the real things).

Those are all the seasonings currently in my cabinet, but curry powder is an honorable mention. Number six without a doubt.

Ok, now where was I going with this? Ah yes, Trader Joe's. Home of a very strange assortment of spices. One of which is "Everything But the Bagel," which is pretty funny and tasty, until you realize that you can't really do much with it besides season a bagel. Or maybe there are other uses that I just don't know of. Yeah that must be it because it's very popular.

Anywho, imagine Brian Thompson hadn't gotten shot. Then he wouldn't have a wound caused by a bullet, otherwise known as a bullet hole. But if you still had Brian Thompson, then you would have everything BUT the bullet hole. This originally stemmed from a joke that I feel like you had to be there for.

  1. only you could put cinnamon above SALT xD
I often feel that things need pepper!
I go 1) salt 2) garlic powder, and the rest are up for debate.
I will shoutout cinnamon for making something feel like dessert without having to use sugar

    1. Ok we need to have a discussion about what things you feel need pepper. Every time I use it it's because I just used salt and I feel like pepper goes with salt. But yes, garlic powder works wonders and cinnamon on butternut squash = chef's kiss.
